Paris Part Deux!

In August, my girlfriend and I will have been dating for two years. We were talking about what we were going to do to celebrate and we decided: Why not go back to Paris? It seemed like the perfect idea! We’ve already been there so we wouldn’t feel pressured to run around trying to see everything and we could just relax. So that’s precisely what we’re going to do. We’re going to spend five days there this time (a little shorter than last time) and we’re going to stay in Montmartre, very close to my favorite location, Place du Tertre.

Over the last day or two, I’ve been looking back through my photos from last year and I decided to share a few, with a focus on Montmartre and Place du Tertre. Enjoy!

A Day at Kennywood

June 22nd, 2009 | 6 Comments | Posted in My Photos

On Friday, my girlfriend and I headed up to Pittsburgh to spend Father’s Day weekend (and my birthday weekend) with my family. My father and stepmother were spending a day at Kennywood with their niece and nephew so we decided to meet them there. I was actually quite excited since I used to go there every year when I was younger and I haven’t been there in years. So we walked around a bit, rode the Thunderbolt, and I even managed to win a large Steeler bear for my girlfriend by throwing three footballs in a tire. Not bad.

Anyway, here are a few photos from the day… Click on each for a larger version…

Night Photowalk (Part II) in the Books!

June 14th, 2009 | 6 Comments | Posted in My Photos, PhotoWalking, Site News

Overall, last night’s photowalk went very well! We had a pretty good turnout (approximately 25-30 people) and the weather managed to hold out for a little while. We departed the Lincoln Memorial around 7:40 and managed to get to the World War II Memorial (some got up to the Washington Monument) before the lightning and rain started. Even so, it looks like everyone had plenty of time to take some great photos! Below, I’ve included one or two of my own photos followed by some of the photos that have been added to our our Flickr group.

A special thanks to everyone that made it! If you haven’t done so already, don’t forget to add your favorites to our our Flickr group!

Small Page? Can’t Wait? Get a Facebook URL now!

June 11th, 2009 | 4 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

As you may have already heard, Facebook is finally introducing vanity URLs for individuals and Fan Pages. The land rush starts at 12:01am Eastern, this Saturday morning. Given that Facebook has turned out to be a huge part of my photography business, I was quite excited to hear this, especially since I just started a Facebook page.

For those of you that don’t know what all the fuss is about, Facebook has become a hub for people and businesses, big and small. It’s an ideal place to market to your customers without them feeling like they’re being marketed to, and it’s a great place to interact with potential customers. The problem, though, is that Facebook doesn’t have very pretty URLs. Below are the full URLs to my personal profile and my photography page:

Personal Profile: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=731176048
Photography Page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Washington-DC/Shawn-Duffy-Photography/107449143942

Given that, for many reasons, I’d actually prefer that potential customers go to my Facebook page, this presents a problem. How do I give them a URL that’s easy to remember or can fit on a business card? Well, that’s why Facebook is introducing vanity URLs. Small, easy to remember URLs for your personal profile and your business page. Sounds great, right?

But then I read a little more and saw the following:

“Your Facebook Page must meet two requirements: it must have been live on Facebook prior to the May 31, 2009 cut-off date and have had a minimum 1,000 fans at that time.” [link]

Hmm. Well that sucks. The limit is temporary (other Pages will be eligible on 28 June) but I want a Facebook URL now! My page has been doing well but it only has a little over 200 fans. So what can I do?

Well, if you have your own domain name and website and a tiny bit of PHP foo, you don’t even have to wait until Saturday morning!

Go to your website to the document root. The document root is the top-level directory of your site. For many people, this might be a directory called public_html, though yours may be different. Go into that directory and create another directory called facebook. To access this directory from a web browser, you would simply go to:

http://yoursite.com/facebook

Enter that directory, and create a file called index.php. In that file, put the following code, with the link to your page or profile:

<?php
header('Location: http://www.facebook.com/pages/....');
?>

So, for example, mine looks like this:

<?php
header('Location: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Washington-DC/Shawn-Duffy-Photography/107449143942');
?>

That’s it! Now my new Facebook URL is:

http://shawnduffy.com/facebook

Go ahead. Click it. It’ll take you right to my page. It’s short, easy to remember, and may actually be better than a real Facebook URL because it’s under my domain!

Just thought I’d share…

Flaunt: A Teaser

June 7th, 2009 | 11 Comments | Posted in My Photos

Tonight, I had the opportunity to shoot the Flaunt Runway Fashion Show with Marc Benton. We had a great time!

We decided to arrive around 2:30 so that we could be there for set up and to get some ‘behind-the-scenes’ preparation shots. Since I was going to be coming from another shoot in the morning, I brought all my lighting gear with me and offered a free shoot to any of the models after they were out of hair, make-up, and wardrobe. I’m glad I did because I think we ended up with some great shots…

The street in front of the gallery was closed so I decided to do a few in that location with the models. I mean, when else are you going to get a completely empty street in DC? The sun was shining really bright on the street but I decided to shoot into it anyway. My general set up for most of the street shots was two Speedlites, one at the model’s eye level (camera right) and one aimed at around the model’s midsection (camera left). I changed the position of the light a bit depending on the model’s pose and as the sun started going down but the general idea was the same. I metered the sky down to about f/20 or f/22 to darken it as much as I could and then cranked the strobes up to full power. I then positioned myself so that the sun would be right behind the model’s head. Most of them had their hair teased really high so I thought the sun would make an excellent backlight to illuminate the hair.

The results were great! You can see a few examples with Jordyn below. These are almost directly out of the camera, no Photoshop:

That’s about it for tonight… I filled up five 8GB CF cards throughout the shoot so I have plenty of images to go through. I’ll post more by the end of the week…
