In Harm’s Way

October 28th, 2008 | 8 Comments | Posted in Of General Interest

Last week, the CW television network aired an episode of their series In Harm’s Way which highlighted the work of Zoriah Miller and Alissa Everett, war photographers on location in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Unfortunately, I missed the original broadcast but, luckily, the entire episode is available online at Hulu. Full episode below:

If you’re like me, watching this may make you want to quit your comfortable day job and head off to a conflict zone. :-) Enjoy!

My photography reading list

October 24th, 2008 | 22 Comments | Posted in Of General Interest

When I first started this blog back in January, one of my first posts was my list of photography RSS feeds. Nine months, and almost 500 subscribers later, my reading list has, of course, grown. So, I thought I’d share my current list of photography subscriptions with you. You can click on each of the blogs and their feeds individually or you can download all of them in a single OPML file that you can import directly into your feed reader.

I’m sure there are some excellent blogs that have been left out, so please let me know what you think should be included in the comments!

Photograph the vote!

October 23rd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Of General Interest

During the Maryland primaries, I blogged about the The New York Times Polling Place Photo Project. From the project website:

“The Polling Place Photo Project is a nationwide experiment in citizen journalism that encourages voters to capture, post and share photographs of this year’s primaries, caucuses and general election. By documenting local voting experiences, participants can contribute to an archive of photographs that captures the richness and complexity of voting in America.”

Be sure to check your local state, county, or city statutes to find out if and where you can take photos on election day. And be sure to be nice to the election officials! They are the front lines of our democracy and they will be in for a long and busy day!

Happy Halloween!

October 21st, 2008 | 10 Comments | Posted in My Photos, Site News

OK, so it’s not quite Halloween… Tonight, my girlfriend and I decided to carve up the pumpkins bought on Sunday. Here’s the finished product!

Happy Halloween!

OK, OK… so it wasn’t freehand. We’re not artists. We actually used two of the patterns that came with the carving tools we bought last week. I think they turned out pretty well!

Sunday Driving

October 19th, 2008 | 8 Comments | Posted in My Photos

My girlfriend and I were getting a little antsy this morning so we decided to take a drive all the way out to Middleburg, VA to walk around maybe take some photos since it was a beautiful fall day. On the way back from Middleburg we stopped at Sky Meadows State Park where we picked up two pumpkins for carving this week. A few shots below…

I just received some very exciting news! One of my photos from Palestine was chosen as a finalist for the First Annual Fotoweek/DC photo contest! As a result, it will be on display in Georgetown for the entire week of the festival and I’ll be attending the Fotoweek/DC Gala being held at the National Geographic Society on November 22nd. Needless to say, I’m pretty psyched! More details as they become available…

Gone to the dogs!

October 15th, 2008 | 5 Comments | Posted in My Photos

On Sunday, I went with my mother to a dog show in West Friendship, Maryland. We lost our Doberman about a month ago to cancer (I mentioned him getting cancer a few months ago) so we decided that we really wanted to see the Dobermans and Akitas (my mother owned an Akita a few years ago as well) in the show. Below are some of my favorites from the day:

Harper’s Ferry on Columbus Day

October 14th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in My Photos

My girlfriend and I were both lucky enough to have Columbus Day off this year so we drove out to Harper’s Ferry, WV. I have always heard how beautiful the area was but I had never had the chance to visit. We arrived in Harper’s Ferry around 9:30 or 10am and took the shuttle bus from the visitor’s center into town. From there we walked across the river and hiked up the Maryland Heights trail to the top of the mountain overlooking the town. What a beautiful view! After hanging out up there for a little while, we hiked back down, grabbed a bite, and finished our little tour of the town. If you’re within driving distance of Harper’s Ferry, I would highly recommend a day trip to go see it. Especially this time of year! A few photos below:

Morning in Great Falls

October 13th, 2008 | 10 Comments | Posted in My Photos

As I mentioned last week, I did some family portraits in Great Falls National Park this weekend. Since the portraits were scheduled for 8:30am, I decided to get there as soon as the park opened at 7am so I could stroll around the trails a bit. It was gorgeous! There is hardly anyone else around and, when you’re walking through the trails, you practically trip over deer. It’s very peaceful… almost as if you’re peeking in on a world you’re not meant to see.
