Cherry Blossom Photo Contest!

April 1st, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Of General Interest

Being a photographer in DC means that, at one point or another, you’ve probably taken photos of the annual cherry blossoms. (You can see mine here.) Well, the National Cherry Blossom Festival and Lulu.com want your photos! Prize information below:

“Twelve photographs will be selected as finalists to be featured in the 2009 Official NCBF Calendar. Finalists will receive a free copy of the calendar as well as an NCBF prize package. Of the 12 finalists, one photograph will be chosen for each of the contest categories - Best Festival Scenery Photo and Best Festival Event Photo. Each Category Winner will receive two tickets to anywhere Southwest Airlines flies. One Category Winner will be selected as the Official NCBF Contest Winner and will be featured as the cover image on the 2009 Official NCBF Calendar.” (link)

You can even choose to sell your photo as a download upon entering the contest!

The contest runs until April 30, 2008. For more information and to enter your photo, visit:

http://www.lulu.com/partners/ncbfcontest/

NOTE: Per the contest terms, by submitting your photo you:

“grant the NCBF a non-exclusive, perpetual, royalty-free, worldwide license to use your Entry in the 2009 Official National Cherry Blossom Calendar and in any other way and in any other media”

This still might be a good contest to enter, especially if you win the plane tickets, but keep that in mind… Extra-special thanks to Patty Hankins for pointing this out in the comments. Thanks Patty!

Cherry Blossoms 2008

March 30th, 2008 | 13 Comments | Posted in Featured, My Photos

For the first time since I moved to DC six years ago, I finally got the chance to really photograph the annual cherry blossoms down by the Tidal Basin. I woke up around 4AM and arrived at the Tidal Basin at around 5 to make sure I could beat the sun and crowds. I managed to do both. Below are a few of my favorites from the few hours I spent down there:

Jefferson Memorial in HDR

A three shot panorama of the Thomas Jefferson and his cherry blossoms...

I\'m sitting right below the branches holding my Speedlite out over the water

My favorite sunrise shot

The obligatory through-the-blossoms-to-Jefferson shot

The Washington Monument overlooking the Tidal Basin

Anyone else wanna share their cherry blossom photos? There were a ton of photographers there yesterday morning. If you were one of them, put a link to yours in the comments!

You can buy prints of some of the featured photos here over at my online gallery.

You can also see the rest of my shots of the cherry blossoms in my Flickr stream.
