Friday Link Love

May 9th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Of General Interest

It’s been a couple weeks since we did a “Friday Link Love” post… Again, thank you to all of my readers who have waited patiently while I have bombarded them with photos of Paris. Now, we get back to work. This week’s edition of “Friday Link Love” may include a few stories that are older than one week… I have been keeping tabs on some interesting stuff over the last two weeks and I hope you’ll find them interesting, as well. Ready? Here goes…

- Scott Kelby’s new online class Professional Portrait Retouching Techniques goes live today!

- You have until June 17th to submit photos to the Exposure Photography Competition. Grand prize is $2000 cash and a photography show featuring your work in New York City.

- Jeff Revell of PhotoWalkPro is organizing a photowalk on June 1st in Georgetown for my fellow DC photographers. Unfortunately, I’m gonna miss this one, too since I will be coming back from India on June 1st. But, if you’re going to be around… Go check it out!

- DPS has Parts 1 and 2 of their Introduction to External Flash Units published. Go check them out!

- ReynsWim is offering a free bundle of 70 Photoshop Actions to Enhance Your Photos.

- The Wedding Photography Blog offers up Ten Tips for Building a Photography Business.

- On a related note, David Ziser of Digital ProTalk offers up his series: Building Your Wedding Business.

- One of my Twitter contacts, @ellenwilson recently pointed a recent article of hers: Could You Be a War Photographer?

- Thomas Hawk highlights a recent printing fiasco from SmugMug and, as expected, their support staff are right on the issue. I can also personally vouch for the customer service support at SmugMug… They are, quite simply, the most responsive company I’ve ever done business with, from top to bottom.

That’s about it for this week… If there’s anything I missed, let me know in the comments!

Friday Link Love - Special Edition

April 18th, 2008 | 9 Comments | Posted in Featured, Of General Interest, Site News

Back in February, I tried something out as a way to thank all the people who read this site, particularly those that take the time to comment on it. What I did is I went back through all the comments that had been left on this site and posted a link to the person’s website in a Special Edition of Link Love. Well, I think it’s about time to do that again…

The last time I did this, there were 193 comments on my site and, if I’m not mistaken, I only had around 60 subscribers. Today, there are almost 600 comments and almost 300 subscribers! Thank you all very much! The best part of this whole ‘blogging’ thing has been meeting so many new and talented people!

So, here are the websites of all the people who have left comments on my site since February 27th, the last time we did this… Please visit some of the sites below, you’ll be glad you did!

This is in reverse chronological order starting with the most recent…

Again, thank you sooooo much to all my readers and commenters. This has been a blast and it really is all because of each of you. Thanks!!

Did I leave yours out by mistake? Have you left a comment on this site since February 27th? Let me know and I’ll add you to the list.

In the course of the last week or so, I’ve found a ton of great photography articles… Here, I’ll share some of my favorites from the last week or two:

- Photographer Paul Indigo has an interesting post on the two types of photographers and why you should take the time to learn what kind you are in order to improve your work.

- Brian Larter has a post that I found very informative about “How To Shoot Using a Grey Card” and using it to get better white balance.

- The 2008 Pulitzer Prize winners were announced recently.

- Check out this very cool project where someone left a disposable camera tied to a bench and asked people to take a photo. Very creative idea!

- I love listening to podcasts on my long commute into work. As a result, I was pleased to find this list of the Top 10 Podcasts for Digital Photography over at Photo-Mentor.

- Photoshop Roadmap offers up 100 Wonderful Photo Effects Tutorials.

- Martin Pot has an interesting tutorial on creating a tilt-shift effect in Photoshop.

- One of my favorite sites, All Day I Dream About Photography has a great post on photographing auroras. Really cool stuff and great photos!

- Photocritic has an interesting article on something that I know I don’t think too much about: sharpening your photos.

- Last, but not least, Brian Auer of EpicEdits is asking us “What Would You Do… If You Could?”. Head over and share your ideal photographic world with Brian.

Did I leave anything out? Have any links that you want to share? Leave them in the comments.

No Link Love today - New special edition coming!

April 4th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in Site News

I know I’ve gotten in the habit of posting the “Friday Link Love” articles but, unfortunately, this week I’m going to have to pass. The good news is that I have been busy working on a new project (and opportunity) for my fellow DC photographers. I’m hoping to break the news about this by the end of the weekend, so stay tuned!

Also, while we’re talking about the weekly Link Love articles, I wanted to let everyone know that I plan on doing a Special Edition of Link Love soon. The last Special Edition seemed to be a pretty big hit among my readers and, since my subscriber count has grown a bit since the last Special Edition, I wanted to give all my new readers a chance to get a little Link Love for themselves.

For the uninitiated, the Special Edition of Link Love is where I look back through all the comments that have been left on this site, and I post a list of links to all the websites of those who have commented. The next Special Edition will be a list of all the people (and their sites) who have left a comment since the last Special Edition. So, if you’re a new reader and/or you’ve never commented on the site before and want a link back, leave a comment somewhere on the site, and I’ll send a little link love your way within the next week.

It’s been a busy week for me at work and an even busier week out on the interwebs… Here are a few articles from the last week you might enjoy:

- The big news in the photo world this week: Adobe released their free, online version of Photoshop: Photoshop Express. Check out the reviews and test drives from Scott Kelby and Jeff Revell.

- Patty Hankins has an interesting description of using selective focus in your photography.

- Photopreneur has an interesting post on unusual photography business niches.

- Blurb, an online photo-book publisher, is offering $25,000 for the best self-published photo book. Read about my wonderful experience with Blurb here.

- A Photo Editor is offering to promote your best images for free! Read the details here.

- PopPhoto has a great interview with photojournalist John Moore here.

- Darren Rowse of Digital Photography School and Problogger encouraged all his Twitter followers to send him their best blog post from the past week. The result is an impressive list of content you may have never seen before.

- For DC photographers: I mentioned two days ago, Artomatic 2008 registration opened this week. Artomatic is a huge month-long art show for Washington, DC artists. Registration is first-come, first-serve so go register!

- Another link for my fellow DC photographers: The Washington cherry blossoms are in full bloom! I’ll be heading down to take some photos near the tidal basin before sunrise tomorrow. If you’re up that early and would like to join me email me or hit me up on Twitter. Check out the website of the National Cherry Blossom Festival for more info.

- And, last but not least, there are only a couple days left to submit your best cameraphone photos!! The top two photos will receive a $100 and $50 Amazon gift certificate! Add your photos to our Flickr group by Monday!

It’s that time again… Just wanted to share a few interesting links and articles I’ve found over the last week or so. I hope you find them interesting and helpful!

- Photojojo has a great article on your rights as a photographer. On a related note, a British MP is trying to curtail the harassment of law-abiding photographers.

- Great article from Photopreneur on choosing a niche in which to specialize.
- New digital forensics software claims to be able to discover Photoshopped images.
- PopPhoto Flash has a cool little video on how lenses are made.
- According to DCist, the peak dates for Washington’s cherry blossoms are between March 27th and April 3rd. If you’re planning on taking some photos of the cherry blossoms, be sure to check out this article from Hankins-Lawrence Images for some tips on photographing this annual event.
- Finally, I know a lot of you have your own blogs and a large number of them appear to be running Wordpress. Well, Wordpress 2.5, a major release, will be out soon. Are you ready for it? Check out this sneak peek and this upgrade prep checklist.
