Project Cameraphone Winners!

March 31st, 2008 | 11 Comments | Posted in Featured, Photo Projects, Site News

As promised, it’s time to announce the winners of Project Cameraphone! Admittedly, the pool wasn’t as big as I would have liked. However, that doesn’t take away from the quality of the winners. I was blown away by the following entries and the fact that they were taken by cell phone cameras rather than a quality point-and-shoot or DSLR. Well done!

First Place

The first place photo, and winner of the $100 Amazon gift certificate comes from Flickr user sir gixxer lot and his Motorola RAZRV3xx:

Second Place

The second place photo, and winner of the $50 Amazon gift certificate comes from Flickr user Alpha Photo and his Sony Ericsson W810i:

Both great photos in their own right and, even more so when you consider they were taken with a cell phone.

Great job! I’ll be in touch with each of you shortly to give you your prize!

Reminder: Only one more week to submit cameraphone photos!

March 24th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Photo Projects, Site News

Just a quick reminder… You only have one more week to submit your best cameraphone photos! The prizes are a $100 and $50 Amazon gift certificate for the first and second place photos, respectively.

You can submit your photos to the Project Cameraphone Flickr group.

There aren’t too many photos in there now so your chances of winning are actually pretty good!

Brief refresh of the rules:

- First and foremost, the photos must be taken by a cameraphone… This could be an iPhone, Blackberry, Treo, or whatever. But it must be a cameraphone.

- Some post-processing is allowed but please leave the EXIF data intact. I need to be able to confirm that it was taken by a cameraphone of some sort. Yes, some of the more l33t among us can edit and/or fake EXIF data. But if you submit a 15MP photo claiming its from your dinky Samsung, the jig is up. Be honest.

- I don’t necessarily expect you to take a photo each day (though you’re certainly welcome to) but the photo must have been taken between NOW (February 11) and 31 March 2008. There is no limit on the number of photos you can post to the group.

- I pick the winners. At some point in the future, I will likely do a more community-driven contest but, for now, I want to keep it simple.

You can submit your photos here.

Project Cameraphone Update

February 14th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in My Photos, Photo Projects

This cameraphone project is turning out to be a little tougher than I thought. I’ve been taking photos with my iPhone every day since I started the contest and I’ve learned four things:

  • The iPhone’s camera is terrible
  • The iPhone embeds very little EXIF data in its images
  • The aperture appears fixed at f/2.8. Is this normal in cameraphones since the shutter is probably pretty slow?
  • With no control over metering or white balance, monochrome is my friend

Anyway, here are a few iPhone photos from the last couple days:

Remember, if you want to win $100 from Amazon, be sure to check out the project details here and submit your photos here.

Photo Project: Cameraphones!

February 11th, 2008 | 13 Comments | Posted in Featured, Of General Interest, Photo Projects

I’ll be the first to admit, I have never really been a fan of cell phone photos. Having a 5D almost always at my disposable has spoiled me somewhat. Not to mention, I just don’t feel like I have any control over the shot from a cell phone. But then I took the photo you see (below right) with my iPhone today and I was fairly impressed with the quality.

iPhone Photo of the DaySo, here’s an idea… I am going to take at least one photo per day for a month with my iPhone. On March 12th, I’ll share my best shots along with any tips and tricks I learned along the way.

Your challenge

I want all of you to join in this project with me and submit your photos to our new Flickr group: Project Cameraphone. The best photo and the best cameraphone tip each win a prize!

Details after the jump.

Picture the vote!

February 5th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Featured, Of General Interest

If you live in the United States, you probably know that today is “Super Tuesday“, where 24 states are holding a primary or caucus to select each party’s nominee for the Presidential election in November. But did you know that you can photograph the event, as well?

The Polling Place Photo Project is a nationwide experiment in citizen journalism that encourages voters to capture, post and share photographs of this year’s primaries, caucuses and general election. By documenting local voting experiences, participants can contribute to an archive of photographs that captures the richness and complexity of voting in America.” (link)

The project is run every election season by The New York Times. You can upload and browse all photographs here.

To my knowledge, most, if not all, states will allow you to take photos at the polls, but be sure to check your state’s election website to be sure. And, as a former election officer, be sure to introduce and explain yourself to the poll workers before you start snapping photos.

Oh yeah, and don’t forget to vote while you’re there!
