A new portfolio

November 2nd, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Site News

Last month, I was lucky enough to have the chance to speak with photojournalist Zoriah Miller on the phone. It wasn’t a formal interview (hence there being no mention of it here) but rather just an informal chat between someone who’s “made it” in photojournalism and someone who’s striving to break into the field. His advice was pretty simple and somewhat reaffirmed something I had been considering for a few months prior. It boils down to… tell a story with your photos. Ultimately, he encouraged me to pursue feature story-type projects where I would use my photos to tell a particular story.

I’ve been brainstorming a few projects over the last couple weeks but, in the meantime, I decided that I needed a place to display them. So, I give you (the relaunch of) ShawnDuffy.com. There are already a few photos from the past year or two there. Until I begin bringing in photos from the new projects I’m pursuing, I will continue to post some of my existing favorites along with a caption to give the photo some context. Some of you may have seen some of the photos there already and maybe some of you haven’t. The photos will draw heavily from my collections of “photojournalism”-type photos… images of Palestine, India, protests in Washington, and so on.

I hope you enjoy it. It involves less reading than here but hopefully you’ll feel engaged by the images and learn a little from the captions. Enjoy!

New theme!

July 30th, 2008 | 9 Comments | Posted in Site News

As I’m sure you’ve noticed by now (unless you’re reading this in a feed reader), I’ve decided to change the theme of the blog. I was looking for something a little simpler and a little more “bloglike” so I could easily post without worrying about custom fields, thumbnail photos, etc. I’m going to let this one ride for a few days and see how I like it. During that time, I’ll be tweaking it a bit, customizing it, and adding/removing widgets. If you notice something that seems a little off, please feel free to drop me a line… I will definitely appreciate it!

A death in the family

July 5th, 2008 | 10 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

I am back in the US now. Unfortunately, as soon as I returned, I received word that my grandmother was very ill and may not make it through another day. So I traveled home to Pittsburgh and managed to see her before she passed away yesterday morning.

I will be in Pittsburgh through Monday for the funeral. I will return to DC Monday night and I will begin uploading photos from my trip.

Thank you all for your patience.

Some site news and updates!

June 7th, 2008 | 7 Comments | Posted in Featured, Site News

I want to thank all of my readers again for staying with me despite my irregular blogging schedule. I just wanted to update all of you on a few things while I have a couple days to breathe between trips.

Regular Features

Oh what a bad blogger I’ve been! As you may have noticed, my regular features (Photo of the Week and Friday Link Love) were not published this week. Given my short time between trips, I’ve been spending time making sure everything is in order for the next trip. In addition, I’ve been busy with work obligations that I need to wrap up before I leave and, most importantly, I’ve been trying to spend some quality time with my girlfriend… away from the computer. These regular features will begin again once I return to the States at the beginning of July.

However, don’t let that stop you from submitting your photos to the Let’s Quit Our Day Jobs Flickr group! There have been some fantastic submissions over the last couple weeks and I can’t wait to go through all of them when I get back!

My India Photos

As I mentioned yesterday, all of my India photos have been uploaded to Flickr. In addition, I’ve also uploaded what I believe to be the best ones to my online gallery over at SmugMug. So, if you’re interested in purchasing any of the India photos, just click on the banner below to visit my online gallery:

Spreading the Love

I try to make a point to spread the love to my fellow bloggers and photographers. You guys come up with some amazing content and photographs and I love being able to comment on them and linking to them. Of course, given my hectic travel schedule in the past month and for the next few weeks, I simply haven’t had time to keep up with all the great stuff I am seeing! You should see how many items I’ve “starred” in Google Reader! It’s gonna take me a week just to go back through that!

So thank you all for the comments on this blog and on my photos! I’ll be returning the favor soon… as soon as I have the time to go through all the magnificent content I’ve saved!

Subscriptions

Speaking of all of you, my RSS/email subscription count has surpassed 300 subscribers! Of course, it’s not going to set any records, but it means a lot to me to see so many subscribers in a relatively short amount of time. Thank you all who have subscribed! You guys are making this whole photo-blogging so much more enjoyable! Thanks!

A New Project

As I’ve hinted before in the past, I am currently working on a project designed specifically for my fellow DC photographers. It could have been launched already but, considering it’s specific to DC, I didn’t want to launch it and then immediately leave the area for a month or two. So, stay tuned in July for some news on that project. I am really looking forward to getting it off the ground!

JPG Magazine

It’s been a looooong time since I’ve submitted a photo to JPG Magazine. This month’s theme, Democracy, was one I couldn’t pass up. So, if you have the time and inclination, go on over to JPG and vote for my submission by clicking on the photo below:

That’s about all for now! I will likely be posting one more update before I leave next week regarding some of the details for my upcoming trip.

Have a great weekend!

The SDuffyPhotography Mobile Portal is live!

March 6th, 2008 | 4 Comments | Posted in Featured, Site News

I’m very excited to announce the launch of the SDuffyPhotography Mobile Portal! With the advent of smartphones and the iPhone, in particular, the web has become more and more friendly to mobile devices and more and more people are browsing the web on small screens. As a result, I decided that it was time for me to hop on the mobile train. So with the help of MoFuse.com, I give you:

http://m.sduffyphotography.com

For those of you still sitting at your computers, this is what you’ll see on your mobile device (iPhone left, default mobile device right):

iPhone - Mobile Portal Mobile - Mobile Portal

WebclipAnd, for you iPhone users out there, I’ve even created a webclip for easy bookmarking on your home screen.

I’ve decided not to automatically redirect mobile devices to the mobile sites. I wanted to give users, especially iPhone users, the option of browsing the regular site.

Please check out the site on your mobile device and let me know if you experience any problems.

Cheers!

A new look!

February 29th, 2008 | 13 Comments | Posted in Featured, Site News

A few days ago, I promised a new look for the site… Well, here it is! I did receive an update on my old theme but was still having problems fixing the style sheet problem in some versions of IE. (Have I ever mentioned how much I hate that browser?)

Did you see the cool slideshow on the front page? If you didn’t, you’re probably using Internet Explorer… Consider switching to Firefox!

This theme does require a fair amount of hacking and customization, particularly when it comes to adding thumbnail images on every post. I’ll be doing a lot of that over the weekend. In the meantime, take a look around and let me know if you see anything that appears to be badly broken in your browser. I’ll likely be changing the sidebars a lot so you can disregard any weirdness there for the time being.

I hope you enjoy the new look and I appreciate your patience over the last day or so when the site may have been acting kinda funny.

More cool features coming soon… And, of course, I’ll be back to blogging shortly thereafter.

Exciting new stuff coming soon!

February 26th, 2008 | 13 Comments | Posted in Site News

I’m busy getting ready for my first photo exhibit next week! I’ve been working on cleaning up my SmugMug, reorganizing photos, and working on this site to make sure everything is in order for the big debut!

Some of the things you’ll be seeing on this blog soon…

  • A new look! - First and foremost, as I’ve mentioned before, this theme does not work properly in Internet Explorer. I’ve contacted the theme’s author (I did pay for this theme, btw), but he has not responded. At first, he believed that the layout problems were due to my custom code. Well, they’re not. I’ve found the same problem in the default theme on his site. Unfortunately, after multiple emails, he isn’t responding. Maybe he’s working on a new release, maybe not. I like his work. I really do. But I can’t have a site that doesn’t work in 90% of the browsers on the planet and, without some acknowledgment that he’s looking into the problem, I can only assume he isn’t. So, it’s time to change. Look for that in the next day or two.
  • The official launch of my online portfolio - As I mentioned earlier, I’ll be cleaning up my SmugMug account over the next day or so as well so I will be ready to take online orders for prints.
  • Limited edition availability - In addition to my online portfolio, I’ll be offering limited edition prints of some of my work, including the photos that will be shown at DCist Exposed next week. I’m still working out how I will be selling them, but it will likely be separate from my online portfolio. I’m doing this because I want to retain control over the printing, framing, and so on. More on that soon!
  • Connect with me! - On my Contact page, I’ll be adding all kinds of ways to connect with me as I build my “web brand”.

Down the Mon'

What you won’t see a lot of this week…

  • Long feature posts - With all the site work that needs to be completed by the end of next week, I’m afraid my time to write more detailed feature content will be delayed a bit. I may be able to squeeze one out this week, but overall, my posting frequency might be a little slower than normal. However, I have a lot of really cool ideas and I can’t wait to post them… Be sure to subscribe to my feed to be kept up to date while everything launches.

I can’t wait to launch all the new features and I’m excited to share it all with you… Stay tuned!!

Looking for IE CSS help!

February 21st, 2008 | 5 Comments | Posted in Site News

I hate Internet Explorer! At the beginning of the month, I posted about some problems with my layout in Internet Explorer. I still haven’t gotten to the bottom of it.

It appears as if some style from the articles is bleeding into the sidebars, but only for certain posts. For example, this story appears the way it should, while this story has the sidebars pushed down to the bottom. The little bit that I’ve been able to tell makes me think it has something to do with the embedded images in a post. But, I am no CSS guru and haven’t been able to figure it out.

So, if you’re a CSS guru and can figure this out for me, I might be willing to pay you if you can fix it. If you think you can do it, email me and we can talk about compensation and how to implement the fix.

In the meantime, use Firefox!
